Heck yes, when I am trying to explain to civilians about our modular layout
I just say "It is called S scale, which means the engines and cars are about
1/64th the size of the real thing." If the folks stick around and decide to
get into S, they will learn the nuances soon enough.
IMHO, we don't need a designation among ourselves. We all have our likes and
dislikes and make our layouts and modules as close to the real thing, or
not, as we wish.
