Dear Peter,
By the time I got to my layout in the late 70's, DMK was out of three
point check gages for code 70. Robin and I had a small S scale company
at that time called "Train Stuff". I was making modern kits and had a
spin caster for the metal parts. But, the metal parts I made of
lead/tin alloy was not suitable for a three point track gage. I found
that there was a low temp zinc/aluminum alloy available called S2. Not
as high a temp as zamac, but could be cast in hard silastic round molds.
Using the DMK blank as a model, I made a pattern and cast up blanks.
Using two screw slotting saws on a fixed mandrel, we would cut the
grooves on a Horz. milling machine. Each code required a different
width saw as the railheads are not the same size for code 70, 83 and
100. We color coded the top of the castings once the grooves were cut,
red for code 70, blue for code 83 and I think brown was code 100.
When Robin and I sold Train Stuff (not to be confused with the new
Trainstuff) we kept a few items that I thought I migh need in the
future. I found a few dozen code 70 and code 83 three point gages in
the orignal packaging (Wow, they were packaged 25 years ago!). If
anyone would like some, they are $6.95 each plus S&H. We ship UPS.
Best regards,
Don
