Hi Ed,

Welcome to "S" scale. I recognize your name. There are actually 
several converts on this board some modeling "S" only and some 
modeling both O & S so your not alone. You'll find it's a great size 
to build in and you lose none of the operational benefits associated 
with "O" scale IMHO. The nice thing is how much less space is required 
to set up a layout and to store the train boxes. Although you won't 
find as much to buy in "S" as you have in "O" there is plenty once you 
know where to look and it is literally increasing everyday. 

I'll let some of the more seasoned "S" scalers answer your questions 
but my intentions are to build with code 100 which works out to be 
around 115 lb. rail.
