    Yes, There's a range from tight to wide on the tab so one can
choose the tightness desired or the amount of extra width to apply to
curves. I run diesels so don't add much extra width to curves but I
guess a long wheelbase steamer might require some.  Once one has some
experience spiking it's easy to gauge the rail with a sheet metal
gauge then hold the rail it in place with a finger while driving the
spikes, extra gauges are more in the way than not, it's easier to hold
the rail approximately in place for a few feet ahead by spiking it to
the ties every few inches as you lay in the next piece of rail....dave
