I think this could be bad advice....If you've never built a turnout, a
jig is a great way to learn what it takes to build a turnout!  The process
provided by the jig, is like going to school to learn!

I suggest purchasing a jig for your most common turnout size, probably
your mainline minimum.

Turnouts built in the jig can be customized...Shortened, by moving the last 
two
PC ties.  For many, shortening is the only customization we should
do, as we should not change the geometry between the points
and the frog.

After building a few turnouts in the jig, consider if you want to build
your next turnouts by hand, or purchase another jig.

I will concede, that if your budget is extremely tight, skipping the jig
may be prudent.  Other options are to buy a jig, than sell on ebay after
your accomplished, or to borrow a friends jig (It would be good to
have a S-scale club nearby).

My layout has 20+ Sn2(HOn3) #8 turnouts built in Fasttracks jigs.  Several
were shortened for industrial spurs.
