Yeah Dave, I've built a couple of switches by hand. I also converted an
Atlas HO to S. At a minimum the point and frog jig make quick work to get
the angles right. But, I like the jig, and even if I just use it to hold
the frog and wing rails in place, it makes assembly of a switch for me so
much easier. As it is now, I have four switches for the layout, that are
almost ready to use and I can fit my flex in and finish spiking them down.
Also weathering the rail and ties is done at the same time when I do it so
the PC board ties aren't an issue. So someone who has built several
switches may find the jig unnecessary but it works for me and I like it.

Hi Greg, Yes, The point filing jig looks like a usefull tool if
one has a lot of points to file.
I think the turnout jigs appeal more to folks that don't already
know how to build a switch by hand. For the experieced builder the
assembly jigs are probably more trouble to use than just spiking the
rails in place, the soldering to pc board ties just adds another step
before the spiking begins! ( and then when it's done the pc board ties
have to be painted to match the wood ties) All the pieces don't really
need to be in gauge before spiking so most of the jigging is redundant
as spiking between the pc board ties will require checking the gauge
anyway.
Since the jigs only build one number turnout they user will have
to learn to build by hand eventually anyway (or spend a fortune on
numbered jigs) so I'd suggest that anyone wanting to learn how to
build switches find some good instructions and build 5 switches by
hand before deciding that a jig is necessary? ....dave
