(1) Try termites.

(2) I have done this, and similar projects by using a radial arm saw         
(9" DeWalt) or my small "table"saw similar to a Micromark.

What you do is make a series of lengthwise cuts with a 1/64 strip left between 
each cut. This gives some structural rigidity to the roof piece as a whole.   
These strips are then removed with an Xacto chisel blade (Xacto The great loose 
handle knife company)

In using this method the excessive power in a larger saw does not overwhelm the 
piece.
