I never had trouble with "kitty litter" back in the 60s and 70s. I did not
have A/C home in those days, so there was no moisture control . A touted
advantage of it was that if you had a loco with open gears on the axle, and
that by some chance a particle would get caught in the gears, that it would be
chewed up before any gear would be damaged. Not exactly up to today's state of
the art, in many ways.
