Gents....Here is a message from one of our local club members which is
being passed along for your enjoyment and amazement. Stimulating to
say the least. I got exhausted just from reading about it.
Cheers...Ed L.
I will bring my AM northern conversion project which should be of
interest to the membership. So far I have accomplished the following,
referring to the scale drawings in MR's Locomotive Cyclopedia and
photographs of Daylight equipment:
Stripped the AM locomotive superstructure (boiler, pilot, cab, etc.)
from its chassis.
Converted the pilot truck wheels from 42 to 36 inch.
Received SSL&S Buckeye tender truck casting kits from Ed Loizeaux.
Purchased and received two NWSL 45 inch trailing truck wheel sets to
replace AM ATSF 50 inch wheelsets.
Converted the AM locomotive crossheads from ATSF to SP Daylight
configuration.
Purchased and received SSL&S lost wax castings for throttle levers and
two smoke box fronts.
Fit and soldered the two SSL&S smoke box fronts and a headlight casting
together, then built up a GS3 nose cone with epoxy putty.
Sanded the nose cone epoxy to fair surfaces and commenced the sealing
and polishing process using Epiphanes marine varnish.
Cut and converted a fifty + year old AF northern boiler to SP Daylight
configuration.
Cut and converted the AM ATSF firebox to SP Daylight configuration.
Joined the AM firebox to the AF boiler, using a fitted interior brass
fish plate, steel machine screws, nuts, and J B Weld epoxy. (NOTE:
Proper dimensions require that the final assembly be about a scale
foot shorter than the original AM die casting.)
Removed the pair of AM smokebox chassis foundation bolt pads and
installed them inside the AF smokebox, using sheet brass, wood, J B
Weld epoxy, a steel machine screw, and nut.
Drafted and cut a pattern for the Daylight orange running board sheet
metal.
Purchased and received NWSL tooling for rivet embossing sheet stock.
Solder-fabricated a Daylight pilot assembly of 0.010 sheet brass.
The locomotive conversion and assembly are now about 65% complete. I
have most of the necessary SSL&S castings I will need to finish the
job. By the time of the BASS meeting I may even have the "skyline"
sheet metal installed.
Thank God for modern epoxies and adhesives.
The tender currently consists of only a short section of a Loizeaux
wood streamlined passenger car sub-structure and trucks.
I will probably have to order special 1/64th scale Daylight steam
locomotive decals downsized from a Microscale O scale sheet. As there
is a minimum order quantity I will have many extra sets on hand at the
end of the project. I went through this process when I had orange Shell
tank car decals made up.
In addition to the above, I am making good progress on the overall
layout. The final ten windows on the northwest wall of the Oakland Mole
were fabricated and installed. The roof structure of the Mole's small
train sheds is done. I next need to complete a few Victorian
gingerbread and drainpipe details on the walls and build the big train
shed roof. Then I can finally paint the whole structure. Ground cover,
water, population/details, and earth coloring from the pier to the
roundhouse are all finished. I only have to build the steam ferry
KLAMATH to complete the waterfront. The southwest bay view backdrop is
complete and the Oakland/Berkeley backdrop only lacks buildings.
