Hi David; The rubbing alcohol has even less surface tension than water with detergent, photo-flo etc. They will all work, but with very light ballast "less is more" with regard to the surface tension so the alcohol (which has water in it anyway) is less likely to move or ball-up the grains of ballast than the "wet water".
