I guess I don't see what all the fuss is about. What bureaucracy? The
NASG subsidizes the SIG. There are only two officers -- the coordinator
and the newsletter editor. The SIG operates as its own entity. The
reason the NASG "captured" the SIG under its own umbrella is twofold:
1. The NASG BOT thought that having an S scale SIG independent of the
NASG, should the SIG catch on, would substantially dilute the
attractiveness of NASG membership for scale modelers. 2. The SIG is an
excellent opportunity to provide a scale affinity subgroup under the
NASG umbrella, particularly since the NASG demographics are dominated by
hirailers and AF fans.

If your philosophies are counter to the SIG concept, don't join.
Otherwise, welcome aboard! I don't care whether you model with
cardboard sides or hirail wheelsets. You simply won't find hirail or
AF-oriented stuff as SIG subjects. But you may very well see excellent
cardboard cars or AF conversions. Can you really tell the difference
once the work is done? That photo of my layout's electric division that
Bill Lane posted on our Yahoo e-group's home page shows three pieces of
rolling stock that are built from substantial portions of American Flyer
"stuff." The superstructure of the streamlined electric loco coming out
of the tunnel was spliced together from three AF Alco PA bodies. The
body of the club car behind it is a splice job of two AF combines. The
superstructure of the boxcab about to enter the tunnel was built largely
from two AF Reading cabooses.

A couple of more comments. Do we really another layer of
bureaucracy? This list already functions as a SIG in everything but
name and "official" recognition within the NMRA.

I am concerned about how an S-Scale SIG would function in
relationship to the NASG. For example I am member of the OPSIG and
LDSIGs which are non-profit corporations and operate independently of
the NMRA. Membership in the NMRA is not required to be a member of
these SIGS and if the national organization shut down tomorrow, the
SIGS would continue to operate without skipping a beat. In other
words, as it appears to me, and I could be wrong on this point, the
NMRA has absolute no relevance to the SIGS.

Would the same apply here to the S Scale SIG? Frankly, I hope not
because I think it would dilute the effectiveness of NASG. I am
proud to be a member of the NASG and am not interested in
participating in activities that would be a determent to the
organization. I am not saying that an S Scale SIG would be such a
negative activity, but I have my reservations.
