Good weekend folks, I thought I would share some ramblings from the
Western Division of the MHRy.
Brian, your questions about the Minnesota Transfer, Frank Donovan
wrote a nice book in 1954 that does a nice job covering the early
history of the line and there are many locals who can share photos
and memories. Your welcome to borrow the book, we just need to find
a time to get it to you. Brian is a member of the Pines and Prairies
who happens to have a job in retail. Brian sightings are almost as
rare as Steve Doyle sightings.
Wonderful links this week on the list. Thank you.
Thursday the PPSSW visited the Minnesota Heartland, we had productive
construction projects going, interesting conversations and wonderful
peanut butter, chocolate kiss cookies. Friday Dave Hamilton and I
were guest operators on the Serria Western, Dave was assigned helper
duty with a U-Boat. As he was pushing a very heavy consist of loaded
hoppers over the summit, the lead engine was suffering serious wheel
slip. The engineer kept asking Dave for more throttle, more push. I
heard Dave reply, "Aye Captain, I am giving her all she can take.
You can't defy the laws of Physics."
We have news the first car in the series "Fallen Flags of Minnesota"
will be delivered in the next month. This will be a SHS Rebuilt
boxcar in the beautiful Minneapolis Northfield and Southern Blue with
Red letter scheme. Each kit will include a condensed history of the
fallen flag highlighting its place im Minnesota Railroad history.
The Minneapolis Northfield and Southern was a prototype, there is
thought that a few of the noteable S Model railroads in Minnesota may
have their rolling stock included in this series. If so that will be
clearly indicated. Information will be posted on the MRIM site soon,
I will provide a link to that site as soon as Jeff reminds me where
it is at.
I am dealing with a challenging personal decision. I am running out
of display shelf space and I have far to many interesting model
railroad "things". I like interesting "things", During an open house
it is fun to hear the comments as we run the UP Turbine and have it
take the siding for a meet with the Zephyr but the projects and
interesting "things" keep building. I am considering selling or
trading one shelf of interesting "things", the UP Turbine and a C&NW
RS36 (featured in the Gaugian a few issues ago). Right now it is a
sleepy Saturday morning idea, it may go no further however I know
there are wise people lurking on this list who may have faced and
conquered similar decisions.

HIGHLY OPINIONATED CONTENT BELOW
I appreciate the energy of folks who are willing to provide the
organizational effort behind clubs and SIGS. Best of luck. We have
an ongoing conversation in the PPSSW about the human need to label
everything, on one hand it might be handy to know if someone is left
handed or right handed, if they have blue eyes or brown eyes but so
often it is used to segregate to make it convienent to isolate a
person or group. Defining the SIG to keep the content focused is
efficient, defining the SIG to discourage membership of any person
because they have different modeling opinions is not efficient. (In
my opinion) The SIG should describe the focus of the discussion while
making the tent as large and welcoming as possible. The leadership
of the SIG should steer errant activity back on track and squash
activity that is "ugly" I might make the illustration of carefully
guiding a young lamb toward the safety of the herd where it will be
nurtured and grow, while you cull out that strange looking sheep with
the big fangs that seems intent on tearing the flock apart.
END OF HIGHLY OPINIONATED CONTENT.

Have a great week guys. Yes, I now I am pithy and perhaps contrary
and yes, I know these might be the nicest things one could say about
me. I just have to deal with that.
