When I was a conductor on a Santa Fe local out of Joliet, IL, one
Sunday we handled 98 cars from Joliet to Lockport with one 500-Class
Fairbanks-Morse switch engine, that's uphill to boot. We didn't go too
fast, and sparks from the exhaust were setting the ROW on fire, but we
were moving. I don't think I've ever seen a switch engine that could
handle what those engines did
