Dear Arden,
When we naively submitted our 2-8-0 proposal in 1999 (Yikes, has it
been that long ago?), we were going to have one version with extra code
110 parts. Driver #1 & #4 could be changed to code 110 (with a new lead
truck and tender axles). When our own engineer who had been working on
this project with us for years struggled for several hours to put the
linkage back together on an engineering sample, Mike and I realized we
may have a problem. The decision was made to have two versions, a code
110 and a AF comp (a first for SHS). But, as Bob noted, our builder
made the frame so close to the prototype measurements, if all flanged
drivers are used, you would only be able to negotiate prototype radius
curves. So, yes, driver #2 and #3 are blind.
Right now, except for a few Erie locos, the code 110 are out of
stock. But, in Hong Kong, we have another batch waiting to be shipped
after Chinese New Year. We should see these in 6 weeks. We will have a
limited supply of all roadnames in code 100 (we have all roadnames and
roadnumbers of the AF comp. in stock now). Since the code 110 version
arrived in July, they have sold 50% greater than the pre-arrival orders
and that is how they sold out. In a way, the delays in this project
allowed us to have chassis destined to be AF comp, made into code 110s.
The Tsunami's have also made a big difference in the sale of this
engine as they are the first ones from us with DCC sound that will also
operate using DC. If you have not heard the Tsunami sound, you are
really missing something. Half of all the DCC systems we now sell are
for AF comp. engines.
