Interesting, as I have no rememberance of Athearn
making a depressed center flat in HO.
Pieter...(and whoever else is curious).....I checked with some HO
buddies who were active in the hobby many years ago and nobody can
absolutely remember if Athearn made a short depressed center flat car.
Some folks seemed to remember one and others had no recollection of
anything. This car was originally built back in the 1970s sometime and
our collective memories have failed us over the intervening 35 years.
Yuk.... Anyway, regardless of who made the basic body casting, the
concept could be used with an HO flat car of most any kind. A
lengthwise cut was made along the 2/3 line on two cars and the larger
sections were then glued together resulting in an S scale width.
Cast-on HO details were carved off, S details were added. S trucks
installed, and (for me, anyway) HO couplers were used. The load is
comprised of pieces of wood from the scrap box combined with large O
scale flywheels which came from a gold mine crushing/sorting structure
kit. An unusual load, but sort of plausible -- at least for me. So
this is really another multi-scale piece of rolling stock using items
from HO, S, and O scales all combined. I would think most any HO flat
car could be handeld in the same way to add some variety to your fleet.
Quiz #6 coming up after this next weekend. Gotta get busy for the big O
SCALE WEST + S convention. Cheers...Ed L.
