Two short lines in central California that have been resistant to leaving
the old engines behind are now acquiring used, worn out, beat up and tired
ex-SP SW1500's. One still has probably the biggest working collection of GE
70 tonners and that is the Modesto and Empire Traction company. The other
uses Alco S series switcher but has picked up a couple of Conrail SW's and
now a pair of the same UP cast off ex-SP SW1500's. The Sierra Railroad
brought one of its Baldwin S-12's out of retirement to pull a dinner train.
So here in the 21st century diesels that took on steam are still puttering
around. Andre's idea of flexibility for his switching layout is well
thought out IMO.
