In the 80's I was associated with two shortlines that used those, one was
the Dardanelle & Russellville (in Arkansas) and the Eureka Springs & North
Arkansas in, of all places, north Arkansas (Imagine that.)

The ES&NA used theirs on the dinner train as well as general switching
service. On the D&R, the venerable little switcher was simply a workhorse, a
tool in which to do one's work.

At the time, I thought they were neat old engines, but guess I didn't fully
grasp their history during that point in my life.

On the D&R, I have good memories of the way the warm cab felt and smelled on
a cold and frosty morning... as well as good memories riding the steps while
switching on gorgeous spring days. (The summer memories are scorchers in
these parts.) I also recall the cozy cab at nights on the ES&NA on late
autum (or winter) dinner runs. Really, it's moments like these and a
thousand others, that are the real reasons many railroaders want to
railroad. I have noticed though, that the longer you're in railroading, the
farther apart such "moments" take place... so I've learned to savor them
when they DO happen.
