(Courtesy Kansas City Southern) SAN LUIS POTOSI, Mex. - Kansas City Southern officially unveiled its "new" paint scheme today, with a ceremony featuring ES44AC 4650, currently the only engine painted in the colors. The company will hold a similar ceremony in Kansas City in April. The colors first appeared on KCS' Southern Belle passenger trains, which operated from 1940 until 1969. The company will use the paint scheme on 30 EMD SD70Ace locomotives and 30 ES44ACs. The 4650 belongs to KCS subsidiary Kansas City Southern de Mexico; KCS and its subsidiaries have signed letters of intent to purchase 70 more EMDs and 80 more GEs, all of which should receive the new paint scheme. The new locomotives aren't the only paint story at KCS. The company has committed to purchase 1,050 covered hoppers and 150 covered steel coil cars, which will be delivered in a paint scheme "complimentary" to the new locomotive scheme.
