The U25 may be one of the latest to be available in S but it's not a late
modern unit. I think the last U25B's (with a few exceptions) were gone by
the late 70's or very early 80's. I have a book which mentions a few around
1991 but no detail on what happened after that.
For branchlines and industrial applications, you will find just about any
older loco, including switchers, still in service. In my corner of the
world, the Alco S1 and S3, and the EMD SW9 still run daily. Even GP9's,
albeit with a little rebuilding, also ply the rails.
