You're too funny, Bill!

I use the same reference system, and have for years. And don't forget, we also
have access to the NASG library.

I recommend these techniques, which I myself use:

  * Clip articles for future reference and save them in folders
  according to subject.

  * Use the online model railroad index <http://www.index.mrmag.com/>
  to identify articles of interest.

  * Find a buddy who keeps all his magazines and rely on his good will
  for access.

I do have 1948-1956 bound volumes of Model Railroader magazine that I
skim periodically for general inspiration. These I plan to keep
  indefinitely without cutting up.

My preferred reference medium is a piece of paper that I can hold in
my hand, write on, carry with me, etc. I would not choose a digital,
computer-based method to save information. I spend too much time in
front of this screen as it is, while carloads of S scale okra and
Brussels sprouts sit in the dark downstairs awaiting dispatch to
  hungry New Jersey gourmands.
