Problem with converting everything is that in some cases, and according to Don Thompson the man himself, it won't work to convert original equipment to AF. In my case, a crane car is one that I wanted to try to convert. But apparently the car was too heavy for the SHS scale wheelsets and the AM sets would not work without considerable modification of the car.
My bottom line is that I will be running AF, and AF-like wheels and scale-like couplers wherever possible. Here again, some of the AF stuff is kinda difficult to convert, not impossible, but requires removing rivets and reworking the car. Not outside my envelope and I may go that route in time, but for the present It will be AF>AF coupling and scale-like for everything else. All I want is to have my railroad cake and eat it too: scale appearance but the considerably more varied options in terms of operating rolling stock and working accessories. Why is life so hard.... What I'm wondering is wouldn't it be easier to just buy scale wheels for the highrail equipment and convert everything to scale? ( or vice versa if highrail is the first love)I bet there's enough unused hirail wheel sets in S scalers junk boxes to save all this double duty turnout worry! What is the driving force behind the desire for scale and highrail on the same layout? Indecision? Obstinance? Masochism???Obstinan ---- ----- --- Dave, I did not know it was that easy to convert everything to scale. If I send you my Southern Railway Mikado, will you convert it to scale and get it back to me in a couple of weeks? No this is not a serious question but I hope this makes a point, namely that it is not all that easy to convert everything to scale. I wish it was because the S world would be much better off if everything was scale. - Earl Henry, Nashville, home of the 2007 SEC CHAMPIONSHIP VANDERBILT COMMODORE BASEBALL TEAM ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
