Tim,
An 'average' of the distance of the back to back distance between wheels DOES
NOT work in the real world of 1 to 1 railroading, why SHOULD it work in the
modeling realm? In the real world it leads to track 'hunting' and could lead to
derailments. It happened with Amtrak's Acela. An 'average' is okay for your
banking daily balance, but it DOES NOT tell you how much you have to spend or
have saved?
It is hard enough trying to balance between a pair of KNOWN standards (old NMRA
& current NASG). The NMRA has finally or should have recognized that .883 is
the minimum between the rails as the distance. I do not recall the NASG back to
back or the NMRA back to back. Stand by and I will go their site and see if I
can find it.....
According to the NMRA for Recommended Practice for wheels (S-4.2), approved in
July 2004, the back to back distance is .800 inches OR 20.32mm min. This is the
STANDARD for the NASG also. The NASG STANDARD also allows for a max of
.839/21.39mm as the Check Gauge. This SHOULD cover Flyer & Flyinel.
Now if Flyer or Flyinel does NOT want for its product to be run with anothers,
that is their problem and the problem of the buyers, but our manufactures are
going to try to do everything possible to create a product that is WORKABLE to
the extant of manufacturing capabilities as possible so that we CAN be United.
Tom of Tom's Turnouts has done and is still trying to improve HIS product and
so has Tom of American 'S' Gauge. They know the need is there and have tried
and will continue, if we are willing to work with them, on helping them know
what we have and what we are trying to do. I have been working with Tom of ASG
and have brought to his attention some items and he has made adjustment where
possible.
These guys are putting THEIR money on the line to help us have a better hobby.
If you need additional work, get to a show where these guys are, bring a piece
and show them. They WANT their products to WORK. They are in this hobby also,
not just out to make a quick buck (NEVER HAPPEN IN S). Go to the ASG website
(www.classictrains.com) and click on ASG beginnings & see WHY Tom of ASG has
done this. I am sure there were similiar hopes from Don of SHS and Tom of Tom's
Turnouts. Each is working in a different size of track (.125 from SHS, .148
from Tom & .172 from ASG). I happen to be HAPPIER with the ASG version of
turnout.
If you can do better the first time out, GO FOR IT!!!!! I will look to buy at
LEAST 2 of your product to test out as I have done in the past from MOST others
who have offered a RTR or semi RTR turnouts. These will replace 15 Old Pullman
hand laid turnouts that are falling apart due to age and extra pressure on the
solder at the points. I am NOT a civil engineer. I want to RUN trains!!!!!!
Our hobby size can be just as rewarding to the first timer as HO or O or G or
whatever. There are at least 2 starter sets, one group from SHS and one from
American Models. They just need more sales and more exposesure.
Our size CAN produce a very nice layout on the standard 4' by 8' plywood that
most first timers use for others sizes.

Dear Tim,> Please enlighten us all and tell us the "vintage gauge" and where
you located these numbers. I have looked for 30 years and never found any
reference to a back to back or check gauge;.> Best regards,> DonDon, Measure
all of your vintage stock, then divide by the number of measurements. That
would be an average. There should also be a mean.Regards,Tim
