Subject: Fw: GE hybrid

Here's the latest in building hybrid mainline locos. GE is finally working
on the concept after Railpower started with rebuilding worn out Geeps for
switching locos. This doesn't tell us the nitty gritty of the hybrid and is
written by an advertising wonk, not a P.Eng. What sort of batteries are they?
Lithium polymer if they are at the cutting edge, but they'll be expensive.
Railpower had problems with their Chinese made lead acid batteries when
internal shorts blew them apart. It almost wrecked the company too. GE are
much bigger and can afford to do this practical testing. How much of the
traction current can be supplied by the batteries is another question I have.
Just like in hybrid cars, the more battery power the less the gasoline or
diesel used. Has GE put a smaller diesel motor in the loco is another
question. Does the diesel motor shutdown when the train is stopped? Short of
electrifying Nth America's mainlines, hybrids may be a welcome solution.
Truckers look out if this saves the railways more fuel. I'll be pleased to
see less exhaust in the cities.
 Lindsay.
