Bill:
Sorry for the delay in responding to your email, but I just got back
from Dunsmuir Railroad Days (the BASS layout was on display) and a
short vacation.
One of the members of our club, Bill Young, has a cab forward that
not only runs, but has two Tsunami heavy steam decoders installed
each powering their own speaker in the tender. I believe the
mechanical work to make the engine run was done by BASS member Rusty
Rustermeir. Our newest BASS member, Eric Tiegel, installed the two
Soundtraxx decoders and a NCE motor decoder.
I saw the engine run (non-stop!) and it sounded fantastic! Eric used
two decoders to get an articulated sound effect. The cams were timed
90 degrees off of each other.
I understand that Soundtraxx has recently released a Tsunami decoder
specifically for the cab forward - it has the articulation sound and
the distinctive air pump sound unique to the later classes of the cab
forwards. The small scale SP folks love the these decoders, but I
have yet to hear one.
Once I get my cab forward, I am planning on using this decoder for
the sound. I am still mulling over whether to use the cams (which
are already installed) to drive the Tsunami as a sound only decoder
and a higher amp motor decoder, or remotoring the engine with a lower
amp motor so I can just use the Tsunami for both sound and motor
control.
Cheers,
John Gibson
