There might be a good reason to follow NMRA's standard if you run 
double stacks...  Missed in this discussion so far is actually 
checking the height of rolling stock once you have a bridge in 
place.  This is not meant to cast any dispersions on manufacturers, 
but not all S gauge rolling stock follows the prototype height 
standards... 

If vertical clearances are an issue on your railroad, you should be 
checking car height along with wheel gauge and coupler height.  
Making an "assumption" can often lead to a bad day...
