John, I've never been able to visit Discount trains. Unfortunately Papa Ben's here in Houston is pretty much dropped S also. When Ben was alive he stocked a fair amount of goodies. What remains are are mostly track items. In addition to that our regional SHS dealer, Tom Henderson has moved to the cool mountains of Colorado, so picking up a couple of cars at the train shows has gotten a bit more difficult also.
Ben would ask me why our group didn't buy much from him. All I could say was--you have stocked AM cars with hi-rail wheels and we use scale wheels generally. You stock AM engines again with hi-rail wheels. You stock AM, Gargraves, K-line track and only one of our guys use that stuff. I offered to help in selecting merchandise that I think would sell but was pretty much ignored. To their credit they did a group order of the ATSF Northerns in scale and sold a mess of them! They did handle some SHS so the wheel issue wasn't a problem (I bought a few). I was in the store one Saturday and one of the sales guys was helping a guy who had asked about S scale (so I tagged along nearby). He was quickly told that S was hard to get a hold of, etc. etc. why don't you consider this 0-27 set. Unfortunately Ben has gone to the roundhouse in the sky, but he did support S in general (he was in N scale) by ordering (I believe) the first S scale NMRA convention car. Later he was responsible for all those limited edition NMRA cars that we've all traded back and forth.
