We all do need a nudge now and then, and that's the job of a moderator. And
frankly neither the moderation needed on this list nor the moderator himself is
bad. Anyone who complains really ought to join the diesel list. I have heard
that some of those guys can burn the eyeballs right out of your sockets once
you read their comments.
On one list in which I do participate, we had a chap who seemed to enjoy
insulting anyone who knew less than he did. I had always considered lists such
as these places to learn, to develop knowledge. No, not for this guy. He had
been a professor. How his students ever tolerated him is beyond my wildest
fantasies to imagine. With today's crop of very thin-skinned students the dean
would have had to let him go or--if tenured--turn him loose in the library as
an archivist.
Our S list has never suffered from individuals such as the one described above.
Perhaps S scalers are of a milder sort. For that and for the work of the
moderator I am thankful. Let's get along and focus on MODELING!
Since I am commenting, I have a wish list of issues:
1. Forget the harsh comments about AF and Hi-railers. Those guys pay the
freight for further development, at least in many cases. They're here, and
they're not going away.
2. Since they're here and they're not going away, focus on discussions about
scale modeling and prototype matters rather than on the Hi-Rail scene.
3. The most inspiring moments are when the discussion is on modeling and
explaining how a certain prototype was modeled. I haven't looked lately, but I
do recall the photos of a modeler who created an SP "Daylight" out of the first
issue of AM passenger cars. I e-mailed him off list to inquire in greater
detail how he did it. Very impressive!
4. Discussion of technical issues.
Hey, I'm not the moderator, and I don't want to be one. Hope I don't upset
anyone, certainly don't intend to.
I really appreciate the many individuals on the list who have responded to my
simple-minded inquiries. Thank you all. You are a great group.
