E unit is the name for a reverse unit and is properly Lionel terminology.
However, it is often loosely used to define AF reverse units as well.

 

Forgot to mention in my earlier reply- when you say e unit functions I
assumed you are sure the drum is turning.  If so, my comment to adjust or
replace fingers ia OK.  If not, get the drum cycling first.

I have a old Texas-Pacific GP-7, and it has caught a cold. The E-unit 
functions....but the engine will only move in one direction. What is 
the most likely cause? All the wiring seems to be super solid.
