There seemed to be a momentary lull in the action here on the list so
I though I would provide an in-activity report. Hey Glen, reference
your comment about the E Units, I was at the Soo Line Historical
Society convention Saturday and I picked up a wonderful photo. The
photo was taken in 1971 at the Chicago Union Stateion. It shows the
E Unit of the Nebraska Zephyr and the Observation of the California
Zephyr between run. Above and beyond the Zephyrs, the details of th
station interior are lost in the muted black and white of the photo.
To add to the artistic interest of this photo, there is a young girl
who looks lie she may be haeading down the platform to catch her
train looking back toward the waiting room. What will be this young
wonman's memory of this trip? will she recall the dark platforms,
the noise of the E-Units as they idle and their compressors pop?
Will she recall the scenery, service and comfort of her sleeper or
will her trip west be a memory that she uses on her children while
they are traveling today? Don't complain, we could always be stuck
taking the train?
I like the photo, it has a nice feel although I doubt it will be very
useful for a modeler seeking detail.
I would also like to report on my in-activity with the Pine Canyon
kits I bought a few weeks ago. Neither kit is complete and that fact
does not reflect negitively on the quality of the models, perhaps to
the contrary, both kits could be done were it not for the huge amount
of personal creativity they leave room for. I started with the
building, sure the castings were clean and square, yes the structure
went together just as easily as the instruction suggested but then
came the question what business will go into this building, then how
should the interiors be finished? This building will be a key part
of the scene in the town of Marilyn so I needed to get it right.
Well, finally the decision was made. One business space is the
Marilyn Savings and Loan, key to this scene is you can see a guy with
a yellow sweatchirt and maroon hat (the MHRY operations manager)
heading for the president's office no doubt looking for a line of
credit to buy more stuff he just needs to have. Coming out of the
office is the president, she is looking pretty nice, she is smiling
at the request but you can just hear the song that is playing over
the bank's intercom...... Here's a quarter, find someone who cares...
as she sends him down the road without the loan. We are modeling
realiity here.
The concrete building is taped together in perhaps the 6th
combination to create the perfect industry for Asuncion. It is nice
that the kit allows that much creativity, I will keep trying
combinations until the PPSSW group comes over on the 28th, then I
will hear their great ideas.
Have a wonderful week, best wishes.
