Bill....

Turnout tie diagrams come with Old Pullman turnouts. And the
no-longer-available American Models turnouts (made by Old Pullman) also have
their own diagrams. The Fast Tracks diagrams are VERY nice -- best in the
business in my opinion. But you should really have the turnouts themselves
before making precise plans. Not all #6 turnouts are created equal. Wise
men have even debated if the Shinohara #6 is really a #5 or what since it
appears to be merely a wide version of their HO switch without corresponding
greater length. Answer, the #6 angle is correct, but the overall length is
way off. There are many differences between brands of turnouts and in tight
places (such as a yard) a half inch off on each turnout can cumulatively add
up to a headache you didn't plan on.

On the other hand, why do you need tie diagrams in the first place? Just
use centerlines and lay the ties down appropriately. Mainline ties are
closer spaced than branchline ties which are closer spaced than yard ties.
Gotta be correct, y'know. None of this standardized flextrak stuff for you
-- the brass rivet counter. Not to mention that many tie diagrams are
somewhat generic and I am sure you will want to make your turnouts just
exactly the same way Pennsy made theirs. Maybe it is time for a field trip
with your yard stick out to some ancient Pennsy track and do the job right.

While there, measure the ballast so that you can use the correct size after
doing the ties. You have many ballast options to consider as well. I can
send you a ballast diagram when the time comes so that each grain can be
correctly placed -- just like the prototype. Have you ever seen the photo
of the Keystone ballast pattern on the PRR mainline? It is made of darker
ballast stones when compared to the lighter stones used for the background.
Really neat. The ballast diagram has a grid and there is a color code for
each grid cell so that you can get the shading exactly correct. Nothing
less for you.

Having fun yet? As if I could not tell. I am. Cheers...Ed L.

Subject: Stuff needed

Hi All,

As I wind down the construction of my modules I am looking towards the
planning of the track.

Does anyone have turnout tie diagrams? Fast Tracks has them for free
download but I think you have to piece them together. I would prefer them
complete and in PDF if possible. I will be using legal paper for which
should work for up to the #8 I think. I need them (left and right) for #6,
8, and 10. Diagrams for #6 curved turnouts in the 50-60" radius would be
great too.

I may need the following code 100 turnouts. Old Pullman, BK or whatever may
do.
2) # 6 wye
2 pairs of #6 curved turnouts in the 50-60" radius range.

Maybe you have them leftover and what to put them up for adoption. Let me
know please...

Thank You,
Bill Lane
