S Friends,
A couple of week's ago my 22 YO daughter announced that she would like
to ride a train! So yesterday, the Werre clan took a little trip to
the Austin, Tx area to ride the Hill Country Flyer. The weather has
cooled enough to make the trip comfortably. I had ridden the train many
years ago when it was powered by a nicely restored S. P. Mike.
Unfortunately some problems with the steam engine resulted in it being
replaced for the time being by a diesel.
That being said, the diesel was an ex-Santa Fe Alco RSD-15 painted in a
S. P. black widow scheme. Most of the un-air conditioned passenger cars
(Bill Lane will like this) were ex Pennsy commuter coaches. I was
surprised at how tight the room was on those cars. The extra fair AC
cars were MP and Santa Fe lounge cars. The all volunteer tourist
operation is run on the same tracks as a fairly busy short line hauling
freight. The short line runs from the Austin area to Lano, Texas (Billy
Click country). As a matter of fact, on our return trip we had to wait
'in the hole' for about an hour for a freight with a six diesel units
hauling crushed rock from the many quarries in the area. It was the
second freight of the day going against us. This trip made for a long
but worthwhile day.
To include some S content, all the replacement ties for this short line
and a under construction commuter line are now metal ties with some sort
of metal clip holding the rails down. So now we have old Lionel, Marx
and AF track with metal ties becoming prototypical--well almost!
