Ed, Your comments regarding the wheels leads me to make a couple of
comments. I really don't like any of the wheelsets commonly available
as to their colors. If you look at the real thing, you wll see that the
wheel thread is a bright silver unless that car has been idle for a long
time. All these blacken wheels are pretty much wrong except for the
face and back. Some time ago NWSL made a bright wheel of that type. I
bought a few and bought a bunch more when Dave Bailey sold out. Now
that being said, if one gets the unweathered wheels you need to paint
the wheels either a very dark brown (Floquil roof brown or rail brown)
but the effect is well worth it. Problem is we all have way too many
SHS, PRS and AM wheels to replace and paint.
When John Verser introduced his first feight truck with the plastic
wheels and axles--I thought this will never work--the axle that is! I
didn't care for the plastic wheels but I was suprised that the axle was
durable and realistic in appearance--too bad you can't use them with the
SHS wheels as I too have trouble with the axles being 'sucked' into the
ramps. I also have a whole box of plastic PRS axle sets stored
someplace, an even heavier box of AM's wheelsets plus a super large box
of SHS's hi-rail wheels.
Your right of course, regarding the non standard axle length--with our
reduced numbers a standard length would certainly be nice and economical
for everybody. Unfortunately the ship in the standarizatioin might have
sailed, as I'm sure nobody wants to change their design now.
This now brings up a question that some of us have had regarding the PRS
trucks. Occassionally I will get a PRS car (many times the grain hopper
but sometimes the house cars also) where the car will lean to one side.
It doesn't derail just rides leaning to one side all the time. Sliding
the car side to side will correct it's tilt until it rolls again,
resulting in the lean again. I assume it's the taper of the axle not
matching the taper of the axle hole--or shouldn't they match at all???
