Thanks Stan. I understand now. I, who spent a significant time wearing a
blue suit, should have known that DOD would have standard three axles per
truck based flat cars to handle the weight. Must have been specified in the
early eighties to handle the M1s when they came out because I believe I saw
M48's and M60's on two axle truck DBB flatcars when I was stationed in
Germany. However, not sure if that was true for stateside shipments.
Have to go look at my WWII tank books to to see how US shipped tanks (e.g.
Grants, Shermans, Pershings , etc.) plus I remember the Germans for the
panthers and tigers took off the outside roadwheels and had special smaller
width tracks for train transport. Mark I through IV, I believe could fit on
regular flat cars without track changeout but couldn't handle mud as well as
the wider Panther's and Tigers which had a bit of the Russian T34 design in
them. . Anyway anyone know of any flats out there with three axle trucks
since I need two of them to handle my four M1's according to the pictures
provided.
Regads.
