To add to Rick's message below, there are lots of shots of Southern F units
and Es in a recently released video with sound from MAIN LINE MOTION PICTURES.
A small portion of this video can be seen on U-Tube with a set of 5 F units,
ABBBA. In this particular UTube video they are green units with all F7s
except for one F3B _http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4c1rlHiDKw&feature=user_
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4c1rlHiDKw&feature=user) . The video that
can
be purchased shows numerous runs of 5 unit sets of Fs, and for me validated
how well decorated the SHS Southern F3 sets were done. The video is titled
Southern Railway Diesels in the 1950s with a lot of shots in Reidsville, NC.
There is also a lot of switching using RS3s and SWs, and S alcos. I am not
very
knowledgeable about the switchers so I am not being fully descriptive of them.
For me, the best part of this video are the shots of the passenger trains,
primarily the Piedmont, going through Reidsville. Some of these show E6s
paired
up, one painted black with one still in the green. There are a lot of
headend cars from Southern and other roads and some interesting Pullman
heavyweights
and lightweights. As an added bonus there are a lot shots in the 1960s and
1970s of the Southerner and the Southern Crescent, primarily shot in the
Birmingham area. The final part of this video shows a Southern freight train
trippling the grade at Saluda. There is sound throughout. My understanding is
that the sound is dubbed in, but they did a terrific job with it.

The website is _http://mlmp.tripod.com/_ (http://mlmp.tripod.com/) but you
can see several clips from this video free on U-Tube.

The Southern Railway had the following F units:
FTA's 38
FTB's 30
F2A's 4
F3A's 102
F3B's 76
F7A's 76
F7B's 72
FP7A's 20
Some were rebuilt to higher specs, IE F3A's rebuilt to F7's internally, and
other mods as well.
If you want road numbers for the above let me know.
