Well a quiet Sunday afternoon and a good time to contribute to the
quantity of discussion on the list.
One evening the PPSSW guys tried a number of techniques to take
numbers off RTR cars, the solutions and solvents all worked to one
degree or another. Tom Lennon came up with a quique method, drawing
a sharp blade back against the letter to remove the ink that is
raised off the surface of the paint. When you are done, the area is
buffed slightly so the decal settles in fine, a bit of dullcote and
violina, done. I want to re-number and keep the number correct with
the car series yet I like using a 3 or 5 the best when putting in a
new number, the crooked numbers blend in nicely if there is a slight
serrif issue. Microscale and others have good decal number sets.
I have also had custom decals made, in example, I made the modern (at
that time) SOO Line for the red and white locomotives. I think I
needed to buy 50 sets, I needed about 6. There was no other way to
get the locomotive schemes I wanted so I made them. Since then, I
have sent sets out to friends in the scale and typically, I get a
nice photo in return. It is a great bargin.
I have also made special runs of cars. I wanted un-numbered DM&IR
ore cars so I bought a bunch extra. Reminds me that Jettie wanted
some numbers didn't he. I wanted the 100 ton SOO Covered Hoppers
from Pacific Rail so I bought a run and this year I had the MN&S cars
done. That has its drawbacks, this fall, Marilyn was looking under
the layout for things and she happended to keep running into cases of
train things. I thought it a good idea to store them here and there,
all over the basement but she figured that one out and arrived at a
pretty good total count. She thought she had me cornored but I used
my two best excuses. The ore cars were done as part of the project I
worked with Don Thompson on (she really likes Don and Robin) and the
grain cars are part of Milepost 169, you know Tom Lennon's project.
I saved the one line I use when she finds something expensive, that
is not really mine, I am running it in for Steve Doyle. Most folks
don't know about these cases of cars, that is because we are
in "S"ecret Scale.
I would really like to do decal sets for more boxcars, that may be my
next good idea. Decal sets are easier to keep low profile.
>From the Pines and Prairies S Scale Workshop, we keep getting more
members in the club. Good thing because when you are the newest
member, you automatically become the club president. We typically
don't tell them that right away and hope we get a newer member before
they figure it out and want to do something official.
I planned on getting a great deal done on the layout this weekend,
other things got in the way but I best sign this off now and see if I
can't salvage a project of two before it is back to work time.
