ED:
Bell Labs specifically developed the LED so that operators could see
indicator lamps in switchboards that didn't produce the heat associated with
incandescent bulbs. So, no, they won't burn and warp plastic. For a lens, you
have three choices: use the old lens, but it may have to be drilled out, get
some clear acrylic rod and make new lenses which will have to be sanded to a
clear front surface and drilled out in the rear, or just use the LED with no
lens. Your choice. Personally, I use the old lens if possible. If not, I make
my own with the clear acrylic rod available from Plastruct. I've done this with
AM's SD60's and E8's. Also, there's a "Dispatch" article about two-years-old
wherein I described producing lenses for an ancient F unit. Can't remember the
exact issue.

Hello,

Do LEDS burn and warp plastic? If I use leds for headlights, do I use the
original lens or drill them out and use the leds as lenses? I'm working on
American Models locos. Thanks.
