Ken and all,
I heat and cool my trainroom with a wall AC unit, so I don't have the
benefit of a central filtration system like you might have. With our AC
bills running very high in the Texas heat, the window unit was a
economical way to go. BTW, for some reason Texas and Houston in
particular pay more for our electricity than the national average--and
we're the energy capital of the world!! Anyway I actually have two air
cleaner units. I have a circular unit made by Honeywell that uses a
charcoal treated fabric that runs almost all the time. I keep it near
my workbench, so much of the dust from sanding and filing will be drawn
into the unit before it gets into the surrounding area. The air cleaner
that I use to clean rolling stock is a unit made by DuraCraft. I don't
know if it's around anymore cause I have to order filters from a
'generic' filter source. The DuraCraft is a very directional unit. I
place it right next to the tracks where it sucks in the air at track
level into a 6" square area and exhausts out through the top. The
filter is a box-like thing with a zig-zag arrangement. I generally run
a cut of cars near the unit and dust the cars with a soft brush, then
pull ahead for the next group of cars. If a car is particularly dusty I
will remove it from the tracks and handle it. I try to not handle the
cars if possible. You will find hoppers and cabooses will probably need
hand treatment because of the hard to reach areas. I will also move
some structures to the cleaner and do the the brush treatment as the
roofs seem to gather the dust.
Hope that helps
