Just returned from Plymouth's RR station. The Santa Steam Train is in town,
which is big doing's for a town of 8000! The train is pulled by #1003, the
restored SOO Line L-1 2-8-2. It's pulling a private Budd car "Notre Dame", the
Wisconsin & Southern business/power car and a restored Milwaukee Road ribbed
side caboose, #2012 (You can get one of these in S scale, required S scale
content).

The caboose houses Santa. Hope to catch some photos in the countryside when it
leaves town mid-day. It's snowing, so this should be fun! This is the first
steam train to visit Plymouth since 1953 along what was a Milwaukee Road
branch. It dawned on me as I was walking around the train very early today
that I have not really experienced steam in the winter. Most fan trips are
summer events and my memories of steam as a youth were limited to NKP Berks in
their twilight years near Fort Wayne, in nice warm weather! It makes quite a
difference: the icicles, snow and ice encrusted trucks and visible steam oozing
from every pore. Neat stuff... cold, but something I wouldn't miss.

Hats off to Wisconsin & Southern and the locomotive's owners for making 1003
available in the winter...

Jim K.
