Hello Andre -

It's good to have you back. I missed your comments. You add a lot of good
ideas and opinions to this list. My message is don't worry about actually
starting a layout.

I am eighty-one years old now and still trying to construct my first layout. I
have started three layouts before this one (two HO and one S) but all of them
disappeared for some reason - one because I was not happy with my workmanship -
one because I thought I was going to move into an old folks home (fortunately
didn't - yet) and one because my ideas of layouts changed.

My suggestion: Don't worry - this is a hobby we engage in for pleasure and if
all you do is draw track plans on restaurant napkins you are enjoying it. Ride
your Harley while you can - the time will come soon enough that this will not
be available to you. Build kits and store them someplace or just give them
away or trash them - the fun is in the building, not the accumulation - design
track plans and evaluate them - accumulate tools - go to conventions - etc.

Building a layout is restrictive - once you start it's hard to change your
plans. The layout can take over your life if it is demanding enough - it
becomes a duty and not a pleasure. Just thinking about building a layout is
liberating and exercises the brain - a healthy activity.

I enjoy your posts - please keep them coming - you offer an insight into our
hobby that is missing in most of the others. Every culture needs a philosopher
to keep it sane - you are our philosopher.

Art Armstrong
