First: a product warning Reading this message is a waste of good
hobby time. Why aren't you in the basement, or at the workbench,
rather than sitting in front of the computer?
Second: to all those that have stepped up in their own ways, to
produce or promote S-scale thank you very much. We really do
appreciate all that you do, and although I am not always happy with
the products you produce, or the magazine you put out, I can surely
admit that you have made my life just a little bit more fun. So,
without a caveat, here's a big thank you to Ron Sebastian, Don
Thompson, Bill Wade, Jeff Wilson, Don Heimberger, Jeff Madden and all
the others that I have not mentioned. It's a great scale to be a
part of, thanks to your efforts. I continue to reserve the right to
bitch and moan about your efforts, but I will never take them for
granted.
Third: I believe there is only one sure way to promote S-scale, and
that is by building models and sharing your efforts with others.
And, coincidentally, that is also the way to get the most enjoyment
out of our hobby. Let's not wait for "someone" to produce a magazine
or a website, or let's not wait for "someone" to manufacture the
right product and then advertise it in the right publications. None
of this will promote our scale half as much as being known as a scale
where models get built and everyone has a good time.
This Yahoo group is a good case in point. Often, the highest
response rate comes from a thread that does not actually involve a
question about modeling. Andre has it right when he identifies that
time spent at the computer is modeling time lost. But, wouldn't it
be great if most of the posts to this group involved sharing your
models and ideas, or asking for specific modeling advise?
Let's all resolve in this new year to fill this Yahoo group with
photos of our projects, no matter how small. Therefore, the only way
you can participate in this group is by getting down into the
basement and actually doing something. Let's empower the moderator
to gently shut down threads that do not deal with actual modeling.
As I said at the beginning of this post this is exactly the kind of
posting we don't need on this site. Let's head down to the basement
and remember exactly why we were attracted to this scale in the first
place it is fun to build models in this scale, and we have a great
group of friends to share our experiences with!
Best wishes for 2008. I am heading down to the basement now. My
current project is to modify the new Walthers trainshed kit for my S-
scale passenger station scene. More to follow.
