For weight I used one cent coins. (Ten pennies weigh about one ounce.)
For the PRS reefer, which weighs 4.1 ounces after adding couplers, I
add twenty pennies. I put them into penny wrappers, which I get from
the bank, and secure them to the floor of the car with acrylic caulk
from the hardware store.
For the PRS 40-foot boxcar I add 30 pennies, and for the 50-foot
boxcar the number is 26.
The PRS/Des Plaines hopper, which was discussed in recent days, needs
no added weight. This is true also of the SHS 2-bay and 3-bay hoppers
and the SHS stock car. They are all a fraction of an ounce under the
NMRA recommendation.
I should point out that I run short trains over so-so track. For my
layout the NMRA recommendation is helpful.
