Not exactly S scale, but if you are a student of industrial/ architectural
history - with a particular focus on railroads - I would recommend reading
"Conquering Gotham - The Construction of Penn Station and Its Tunnels"; by Jill
Jonnes.
It's about vision, leadership, engineering, movers/ shakers and even the
politics of how huge civics works projects got done in turn of the (20th)
century New York. A great story, maybe even ultimately a bit tragic, but
you'd have to make your own decision about that... Did you know, even today,
the tunnels under the Hudson move??
