Ted:
The better brand decoders will allow you to set the lighting features
in just about any fashion you please. The only caveat is to get a
decoder that has an output function for every set of lights you want
to independently control. For example, on my SP GP9's, I want
separate control of a front light, front gyra light, rear light and
rear gyra light. So I purchased a four function decoder.
As to operation of lights by the prototype, I think for the most part
it depended on the railroad. I would suggest you consult your
prototype's rule book or ask their historical society (if they have
one).
By the way, I have found my historical society (Southern Pacific
Historical & Technical Society) and the corresponding SP Yahoo group
discussion list an extremely valuable resource for questions about my
prototype. I would strongly recommend anyone modeling a specific
prototype (or modeling prototype operations) to join such
organizations for their railroad(s).
Hope this helps,
