The critical factor with body-mounted couplers is the transition from straight to curve (or sharp curve to broad curve). With proper spiral easements you will be amazed at the ability of your equipment to negotiate tight curves. It's also especially important when operating equipment of dissimilar lengths. There is a simple formula in John Armstrong's track planning bible, Track Planning for Realistic Operation. Believe me, it works, it looks really cool, and it's easy to do.
