In the 2004 Summer/Fall issue of the "On Track" publication of the California
State Railroad Museum there was an article about the first diesel locomotive to
be purchased by Southern Pacific.
It was an SW-1 by the Electro-Motive Corporation - EMC, predecessor of EMD.
The history appealed to me as did the design and decoration of the loco. In SP
possession it was black, as a proper locomotive should be, with the cab in the
rear and a bell in front with a smoke, albeit short, stack.
I bought an undec SHS SW-1 and now, a scant three years later, have finished
the decoration - two lengthwise white stripes by Microscale decals and a
dry-transfer lettering set from Clover House.
I am pleased with the loco's performance - nice slow pulling - and I am pleased
with the appearance of the loco. The perfect loco for the beginning of the
diesel age in the SP - April 1939. I have re-dated my layout to stay
compatible.
I posted a couple of pictures on the group photo section.
