My recommendation would be to put a $15 decoder into a plastic diesel  
and take it to the layout of a buddy who operates his S scale layout  
with DCC. For a relatively small cost and practically no learning  
curve you can then judge DCC's merits.

If you normally operate your layout by yourself or with one other  
engineer, DCC may not offer any compelling advantage. If sound is not  
a big deal, you probably don't need it.
