You too can have your eBay ID hijacked. The hijacker can then use it
to run up the bid on any item they choose, maybe something like the
brass model I had on eBay. They might put a proxy bid of, lets say
$10,000 on a an "S" scale model. In my case it was a CB&Q SW-7
Locomotive Workshop kit that I built, added a bunch of brass details,
painted, etc. Their whole plan here is to insure they are the winning
bidder no matter what the price!
As soon as the auction closes they can then use eBay's "contact
seller" feature and send you a nifty little email saying they have
paid for the item via PayPal, and, in the email that eBay "ACTUALLY
FORWARDED" to you they include the PayPal site for you to log in. Oh
how sweet it is. That email looks exactly like eBay's, because it
really is!!!!!You know of course that the site they want you to click
on also looks exactly like the real PayPal site except for the IP
address. Oh what a difference one or two alphanumeric characters can
make in those address's. Go ahead and give them your: PASSWORD!!!, and
ACCOUNT NAME!!! Log on to check the status of their payment, NOT!!!!!
I was lucky I guess. The wonderful people that stole some else's
ID never expected the person whos' ID it was that they stole would be
online right when the auction closed and eBay sent them an email
saying they won something that they didn't even bid on!!!!!
When I went online the next day to send an invoice to the winning
bidder eBay was on the ball, I guess the person who's ID had been
hijacked had reported the problem to them, and they pulled the plug
and stripped everything about the auction from my sellers page. I
still have the bogus email in my Hotmail email inbox though. I like to
think that I would not have been fooled by such chicanery, but, like
every one else, there is always that moment in time.
Now I have upset eBay bidders that I will have to be doing a lot
of explaining to. I have found the whole eBay experience this past
year to be very taxing as a seller. It usually runs just over 10% for
me to do each item with all the eBay and PayPal fees. I also never
seem to recover my true shipping costs. When I sell to France, Yes
there are several fine "S" scalers there, Philippe has sent me enough
to cover the currency conversion costs. Philippe, bless you and thank
you very much. I think the rest of the brass diesel stuff I plan on
selling I should let Dan at River Raisin sell it instead of eBay. I'd
rather pay him his commission then mess with a lot of this.
I now have my last 4 brass diesel models to repair and get ready to
sell. For those that have inquired about the freight truck castings I
will try in a week or too to get them done. I have no takers yet on
the CB&Q 4 car scale Zephyr set. After "S" West it will be in Dans hands.
Rusty Rustermier
No, it's the other Rusty that writes the "Scale Scene" and I'm not the
"Rusty Tracks". Those guys have got to be awesome though!!!!
