Marty,

I've had good results in this area using the Bachmann On30 trolley motor block
(available for about $25 - $30). Although it is On30 (HO gauge) the regauging
is just a matter of swapping the axle drive gear onto a set of SHS diesel axles
and replacing the wheel sets.

Here is the URL to my pix file showing the regauging.

Subject: {S-Scale List} Self contained power trucks

  Good afternoon:
I am looking for a powered truck in S Scale. Drop it on the
rails and away it goes. 4 wheels or 6 wheels. It must be DCC
convertible so an old Miller power truck is out. I want a pair of them
to power an experimental locomotive (no prototype). Scale flanges
preferred. I could regauge an HO mechanism but I would prefer to start
  with an S mechanism.

  Thanks!
  Thorin
