The number of scale modelers is low but I think it is a bit higher than
200-400 number given by Roy. The use of AM for barometer wouldn't be all
that accurate IMO either. AM models are relatively easy to trade out AF
wheel sets and slide in scale. I've bought NWSL wheels for that very
purpose. Another opinion of mine is AM is selling less to scale modelers
due to his models being more Athearn like than SHS produces. I know that
I've had to work on most of my AM models to bring them closer to SHS
quality. Don't take that as a complaint because it isn't. It really is a
matter of adding grab irons, stirrup steps and such before I paint and
decal. You know modeling.

I've been active in S scale since AM brought out their FP7. I still don't
have a layout that is considered permanent. I do set up test layouts
occasionally and I'm working on a movable switching layout. Before I
transferred to my present location, I had a movable layout on two hollow
core doors. I was starting to put some rudimentary scenery on it when I
moved.

I came into possession of some 1948-1970 Model Railroaders. One theme that
was being cried then as it is now was the hobby is shrinking. If that were
the case, why is it we have the models available now that we do, in any
scale. The Worlds Greatest Hobby has been a confusing stab at promoting
model railroading IMO. It seemed to me that S was skipped over, large
scales such as G gauge given token lip service, O scale the same with a bit
more for 3 rail. HO had the most press, with N following and some narrow
gauge modeling mentioned. Since I wasn't new to the hobby looking for
information I really didn't pay attention to their efforts after looking
over the initial flyers at a local hobby shop.
