Harold has an excellent point when he says "It is more about content than
website bells and whistles". I've enjoyed his site for several years now
(first introduced to it on the EarlyRail list, I think) - thanks Harold! When
I see bells and whistles on a site, I normally leave - I don't have time to
wade through junk or to clean up the junk that those types of sites put on my
computer.

An even easier way to create web pages (web purists cringe) is to do it in
Word, Excel, Open Docs or a similar Office program. These pages will be larger
than normal, but most people can do them - heck, if you can type a message,
then you can create a web page with any of those. I always had fun showing
this to beginning computer students when I taught at a local university.

I have a couple of web sites for the Toledo & Ohio Central and Winona
Railroads. Since these are historical in nature, they tend to be more static
than the type of site being talked about now. It is interesting to see the
comments along the lines of "I really like your site but why don't you update
it" - people want to get the benefit of the site, but not to participate in
adding data to it or providing data. I also have personal web pages that
compile data from various lists that I'm interested in. I've thought about
making these public, possibly tying them into existing web sites, but there
might be some copyright issues (Yahoo actually owns the contents of all our
posts).
